Guy Fawkes's Day

Guy Fawkes' Day or more commonly Bonfire Night

In 1605 ,a man called Guy Fawkes attempted (próbował) to blow up (wysadzić) the Houses of Parliament (parlament) in London with barrels (baryłki )of gunpowder  (proch)placed in the basement (piwnica).He wanted to kill King James and the king’s leaders. When Queen Elizabeth 1st took the throne (objąć tron) of England she made some laws against (przeciwko)the Roman Catholics. Guy Fawkes was one of a small group of Catholics who felt (czuł) that the government (rząd)was treating (traktował) Roman Catholics unfairly . They hoped (nadzieję) that King James 1st would change the laws (prawo), but he didn't.  Unfortunatelly ,Guy Fawkes  was caught (złapany)in the besment before he could achive (osiągnąć) his goal (cel). He and his fellow-conspirations (konspiratorzy) were all killled.

Every year on 5th November, the anniversary (rocznica) of the Gunpowder Plot(spisek prochowy), Guy Fawkes is remembered (pamiętany). Throughout England, towns and villages light (zapalają)huge bonfires(ogniska), let off magnificent fireworks, burn an effigy( wizerunek) of Guy Fawkes and celebrate the fact the Parliament and James I were not blown sky high by Guy Fawkes.

As well as burning effigy of Guy Fawkes, the bonfires are used to cook potatoes wrapped (zapakowane) in foil and heat up soup for the crowds (tłum)that come to watch the fireworks.

Some children make a "guy" out of old clothes and newspapers and then place this somewhere (gdzieś) on the street and ask (proszą) "a pany for a guy". They actually (właściwie) asking for money to buy fireworks (fajerwerki) with.
